FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

» Do Eurasier tolerate all kinds of weather?
In a view of Eurasier's coat he/she will tolerate any weather. But by looking at Eurasier's character you can find that an Eurasier isn't suitable for being held outside round-the-clock. Also some Eurasier don't like the rain.

» What kind of demands do you have? Should the puppies bred by you go to dog shows etc.?
My biggest demand is that all puppies bred by me will have good, loving and permanent homes. Of course it would be nice that a dog bred by me would also participate in dog shows (at least few times) or other activities but these are not demands. Owners of dogs bred by me must agree to the dog's complete health examination and a breeding examination is highly recommended. :-)

» Does Eurasier do well in dog shows?
I think that Eurasiers' quality in the breed rings is quite good, that is, there is often some competition. In the group rings Eurasiers don't often rise to the winners' level maybe because Eurasiers aren't so much so called "show breed". It would be nice if Eurasier owners would have the energy to show up in the group rings also... the success doesn't come if you never participate. :-)

» Do cats and Eurasiers get along well?
This is all about getting accustomed to something and of course it depends on the cat too. :-) I believe, that if an Eurasier puppy is familiarized with other animals at a young age, he/she will get accustom to them. Getting an adult dog acquainted with e.g. small rodents can be more difficult if the dog's natural instincts come to the surface. Also an adult cat won't necessarily be very friendly to his/hers new dog friend at first.

» How much excercise does a Eurasier need?
A few hours walk daily is enough. Eurasiers are not dogs that will jump over a wall if you were to miss a walk or chose a shorter walk once in a while. If you are interested in walking long trips, Eurasiers do not tire easily either. :-)

» How much does an Eurasier puppy usually cost if it has some kind of a flaw e.g. wrong bite or kinky tail?
This depends greatly of the breeder and the seriousness of the flaw, but I would lower the prize max one-third.

» How badly does Eurasier flake off/cause allergic symptoms?
Eurasier does cause allergic symptoms as much as other dogs. So I don't recommend an Eurasier for a person who is allergic to dogs. Of course there are always cases where a person can learn to tolerate their own dog, but there is always a risk, that if this doesn't happen and then the dog would require to have a new home.

» Do Eurasiers do well in agility? How does the obedience training work out?
Eurasiers do very well in agility! :-) Eurasiers are nicely agile for agility. Though be careful, if the task is too repetitive, the Eurasier may lose interest because Eurasiers are smart dogs and do not often possess a great desire to please. This can also become a problem in the obedience training, but if you motive your Eurasier correctly (e.g. with treats, toys), you can do many activities with your dog. You can also go for many other activities with your Eurasier, many have tried i.a. dog dancing and search and rescue.

» How demanding is Eurasiers' coat's grooming?
Grooming once a week through the underwools is enough. Eurasier's coat rejects dirt, so it doesn't have to be washed often, around once or twice a year is enough. During the shedding of the hair Eurasier should be groomed more often, so you don't have to pick up so much fur from the floors. :-) Suitable tools for Eurasier's grooming are metal thorny combs and normal brushes.

» Does Eurasier fit well being a first dog?
Yes, but if you are getting your first dog or if you are interested in Eurasiers, you should keep in mind that under the Eurasier's sweet teddy bear look might turn out to be a strong character. Eurasier must be raised logically and be firm him/her when needed. Eurasier mustn't be raised ledding him/her do what he/she wants. If you allow this, you will have problems later, when the dog tries to became the boss.

» Does Eurasier get accustom to children, that is do Eurasier's fit to families with children?
Yes, Eurasier fits to families with children and gets along with children well, if he/she has gotten used to them. The puppy must be left alone when he/she wants to be alone and the puppy mustn't be disturbed when he/she eats/sleeps. This must be made clear to the children, so that they will learn how to handle the dog. If the family has a good order for the children, I'm sure it will have room for one Eurasier puppy. :-) Particular attention must be payed to the leadership, because the puppy might not think the children are superior to him/her, if this is not clearly stated.

» May you live in an appartment house with an Eurasier?
Sure you can live in an appartment house with an Eurasier. Though keep in mind that Eurasiers have guarding instincts, so this must be attended to in the puppy's training. From the very beginning it's good to make clear to the dog, that it's not necessary to bark every noise coming from the hall. Also the training for the puppy's alone time should be started early and done well.

» Can Eurasier be kept outside in a cage or a pen?
No, Eurasier is not a chain or a cage dog. An Eurasier has such a sociable character, that it needs a permanent close connection to it's family and it doesn't enjoy left alone in the yard. I think an Eurasier can be kept e.g. in a pen during the day, but not all the time. I rather recommend fencing the whole yard.

» What different colours does Eurasier usually have, which color is rare?
Eurasiers' color scale is wide, only white, white spotted and liver brown are forbidden colors. Most common colors are different shades of brown that is red and beige. Blacks are also quite common. More rare colors in Finland are all black, wolf grey and game color.

» Do Eurasiers always like water? Is it in their blood?
Eurasiers are individuals as all dogs are. Some of them like water, others don't. But Eurasiers doesn't often have liking of the water in their "blood" like retrievers often have. When you take your Eurasier puppy near the water, I'm sure it might warm up to jump in. :-)
